Science is not the problem. The record around it is.

Almost every scientist is honest. The few who aren't don't win by being clever — they win because almost nothing about how a study came to exist has to be written down anywhere a person can check.

Why bad science wins

Every one of these is true today.

  • Because a study can be published without ever naming who paid for it.
  • Because nobody has to prove the data they're describing exists.
  • Because the person who owns the data is allowed to be the person writing the study.
  • Because “that's confidential” is an accepted answer to “can we see it?”
  • Because a study can be withdrawn and go on being cited for years.
  • Because a withdrawal is a sentence in a PDF, not something a computer can act on.
  • Because a study can be deleted outright and leave no trace it ever existed.
  • Because the same small group can fund, write, review and cite each other, and nobody is counting.
  • Because a researcher can name a funder on one paper and not the next, and nothing flags it.
  • Because when an audit fails, “we couldn't check it” ends up looking the same as “we checked it and it's fine.”
  • Because funding, authorship and citations sit in separate databases that don't join up.
  • Because the databases that do exist can be edited, and quietly are.
  • Because by the time anyone notices, governments have already acted on it.
  • Because nobody's job is to go back and tell the people who acted on it.

Not one of those requires a conspiracy. They're just the conditions. Leave them in place and this happens on its own, over and over.

What we put in place

Take the conditions away and it stops working.

  • Nothing can ever be deleted. A withdrawal is a new entry, not an erasure.
  • Every claim carries its receipt — who paid, who wrote it, who actually saw the data.
  • Funding is a structured link, not a footnote — so for the first time it can be counted.
  • Citations point at a specific version, so a withdrawal reaches every paper that used it, instantly.
  • “We couldn't verify this” is recorded as its own permanent fact, and never blurs into “verified.”
  • Anyone can publish, with no gatekeeper — so nobody can be shut out, and nobody can be shut down.
  • Trust is earned by what you're willing to show, and how it's calculated is published in full.
  • The scoring algorithm is public and versioned — every change to it is permanent record too.
  • We make no money on it. Nobody can pay to rank higher or to score better.
  • It's all one record — so you can finally ask the question nobody can answer today.

When a hundred studies agree, how many separate funders are actually behind them?

Today that takes a journalist years, if anyone bothers at all. It's been done by hand before — in tobacco research, and in a case where a drinks company's own published list of the studies it paid for turned out to be incomplete. Here it's a click.

It says 1 May 2020. The paper came out on 22 May 2020. The error is longer than the paper's entire life before it was withdrawn.

A parsing error puts him at a teaching hospital. The most important fact in this whole case — that the data belonged to a private company, not a hospital — is simply wrong in the record.
